Our courses are designed to enable aspiring mediators become fully accredited mediators and help fully accredited mediators become the very best Commercial Mediators.

Mediators completing their Commercial Mediator Accreditation continue to attend MATA’s events and workshops helping to build MATA’s unique Learning Community of Mediation Mastery.

 

Mediator Gathering

 (4th – 5th July 2013, Cumberland Lodge, Great Windsor Park)

The event starts with a dinner so that Mediators can have a social get-together in a private dining room. The following day is the Mediator Gathering. This event will include an update on mediation around the world, a question time with a panel of experienced Mediators, an open forum for Mediator’s own topics and a round-up looking into the future. It is intended as an opportunity to share experience and meet with other Mediators from the UK and overseas.

Advanced Mediator Retreat

(Annually in September, San Pietro in Valle, Umbria, Italy)

This residential course is designed to develop and deepen the skills of mediators who already have experience in mediating commercial disputes. It is open to all mediators, whether lawyers or not, and experience is more important than qualification. The course builds on the foundation skills and processes of civil and commercial mediation.

This list is not exhaustive and we are able to tailor any training/workshops to meet your needs, so long as there is a suitable demand for the training. Extreme Negotiation

(London)

One day course run by Duncan Jarratt (Metropolitan Police hostage negotiator) and Lawrence Kershen QC (Mediator, foremost trainer in principled negotiation and Vice Chair of Restorative Justice Council). A powerful one day course that pushes the boundaries and uses the experience of hostage negotiation techniques to broaden and sharpen participant’s commercial negotiation skills. The first day which was held on 8th May 2009 was a huge success and the positive comments from the participants included:

Extreme Conversations

(London)

An advanced full day course led by Peter Birch (actor and business psychologist). With the help of actors Peter develops the whole area of difficult conversations through ‘rolling’ role play scenarios, enhancing strategies and skills. This day is of value to everyone both personally and in their business context.

Mediation Awareness Workshop

(Run on request)

An intermediate level three-hour session including a commented role-play demonstration and question time. Run for Treasury Solicitors Office, Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and several Chambers and available to all who want a mediation ‘taster’.

Negotiating Across Cultures

(Run on request)

An advanced two-day course on negotiating international deals and mediating cross-border disputes. Co-led by Joanna Kalowski who is an expert in cultural issues particularly establishing understanding and co-operation in situations of cultural diversity.

Advanced Mediation Training Workshop

(In association with the Association of Midlands Mediators)

(Annually in November, Kilworth House Hotel, North Kilworth, Leicestershire. Near Junction 20 of the M1)

Two day course for accredited mediators who wish to improve their mediation skills with other experienced mediators.  8 CPD Hours MATA accredited. Lead trainers are Lawrence Kershen QC and Peter Birch. The cost is £500 + VAT which includes course fee, accommodation in a single occupancy room and all meals including a dinner on the Friday evening in the private Shakespeare Room.

 


Mediation Master Classes

Designed to cater for the newly qualified mediator who has been accredited in the last year or so. MATA run a series of four master classes each year, in the spring (Feb, March, Apr and May) open to both practising mediators and non-mediator guests. where a prominent mediator is interviewed and some techniques of this mediator are identified and put into practise in interactive workshops and a question and answer session.

The Tony Curtis Debate “THE DEBATE”

The annual winter (December) debates are aimed at mediators and non-mediators across the board. The more relaxed and informal style debates are in honour of a well-loved and respected mediator. In the spirit of the consensual approach to mediation, the event is more of a discussion between speakers and with the audience interacting. Speakers are altered every year and discuss a topic announced each session. The proceedings are Chaired by a guest Chairman each year.
